Review Article to Be Published in JSCR
I just received word that my review paper, “The Mechanisms of Muscle Hypertrophy and Their Application to Resistance Training” will be published in the October issue of the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. The abstract has been indexed in Medline at the link below:

More to come on this soon…

Any way I can read it without paying $49 for the article or about $500 a year to subscribe to the Journal?

Great article! I’m curious how frequency fits into the equation. With more validity moving toward moderately higher volume approaches (volume per training session), I’d like to see some evidence towards coupling said volume with higher frequency (a given muscle/whole body trained 2-4 times per week, as in programs such as HST) or lower frequency (a given muscle/whole body trained approx 1x per week, as in common body part splits).
Obviously both high and low frequency training achieves fantastic levels of development per observation of bodybuilders. I’d like to see how this fits into drug-free training. As it APPEARS there is a trend for said trainers to train given muscles more frequently than AAS assisted trainers.

Thanks Shane. The frequency/volume component is something that needs more exploration. Certainly the research shows that higher volume routines are associated with a greater hypertropohic response, but there also is evidence of a ceiling effect and at very high volumes an attenuation of growth is actually seen. This is an area that I will be looking at in future research as the specifics of routine design have not been well studied.
